When you move into your new apartment home and you intend on purchasing a television cable service, you will have a few options in mind. Today cable and satellite are in a vicious battle for your business. Although cable television is the most popular medium, satellite TV is hot on its tail. Some research shows that almost one in four households receives programming from the satellite.
Pricing and Availability
Most major metropolitan areas will have one cable company to choose from and two satellite companies. If you choose to live out in the suburbs, you should know that trees and landscaping may interfere with the signal. Whether its a mountain or tall tree, you should check to see if there may be an issue receiving a clear signal. However, if you live in a remote area, a satellite dish may be your only option.
If you plan on purchasing a dish, you will need to install it outside, normally on a roof or a railing that has a clear line of sight. Check with your landlord to find out any rules regarding the installation of a dish on the premises. Also check to make sure your signal is satisfactory before you sign a contract.
Most satellite companies will require you sign a 12 month contract. And cable companies will usually allow you to go on a month to month plan. Basic cable service will be slightly cheaper than a satellite dish. But for many viewers today, the basic cable is just not enough.
Programming
Satellite will offer more programming and thus more channels. If your a sports fan, you probably will want to choose satellite as you can watch sports teams in almost every major market. Cable will have all the local channels and local broadcasting.
Each service should provide you with a package of what channels you will be receiving and at what cost. Use this list to compare what suits your needs the best.
The key factor will be what you want and what you want to pay. Sometimes you won't have a choice which service you wish to choose from. This will make your decision that much easier.
